Unmitigated praise for an oft-maligned Cleveland-area show? I can see we're going to be fast friends.

I also hail from the great North Coast, and when I first discovered this place I sought out that show like it was the Holy Grail. I've listened to it dozens of times, and I agree with every word you said. I too would picture the cold, frightening Dark Star set against the bleak landscape of a Cleveland winter -- like a scene out of "Stranger than Paradise." But I also agree that the real highlights are Sunshine and China>Rider, which are among the best ever. Dark Star is more debatable -- it's certainly unique, but it also has many detractors who find its formlessness rather unappealing. Don't forget the Eyes> Stella!

Pere f'ing Ubu... Good call. I can remember seeing shows at Richfield in the 90s wondering if any Cleveland/Akron area musicians were going to show up... "Hey, look! It's Chrissie Hynde!"; or "Was that Michael Stanley playing guitar on Not Fade Away?"; or "It was cool seeing Joe Walsh play with the boys, but I wish he had laid of the booze."

Used to see Pere Ubu in the Flats. (With my ever-useful fake ID card -- "Ohio Identity Card" or something -- from right behind the Woolworth's in Public Square.) Devo used to open for them. Pere Ubu was better :-)

Never saw the Dead at Richfield; wasn't in town anymore by the time they were playing such big places! But I'm always happy to champion shows from Blossom or Public Hall ... maybe not always for strictly musical reasons, but what the hey.

Your name makes total sense, btw :-)

I had a fake ID from the exact same place. I kid you not. I think it was in the old Euclid Arcade or something like that (though I chose the more exotic Illinois identification card option). It's really pathetic how well that sorry little piece of plastic worked!

That's hysterical. Yes, I think it was the Euclid Arcade! Guess they had a good, long-running business model.
